Beach Access Path Upgrades

Background

In 2022 a review was conducted of all 169 of our beach access paths, resulting in the Beach Access Path Plan 2023. This plan outlines key upgrades including:

• Ensuring the surface quality and condition of paths is maintained or improved to increase accessibility.
• Closing and restoring underused paths by decommissioning and rehabilitating unused paths.
• Improving path linkage which means strengthening the connections between paths.
• Protecting paths from erosion also known as erosion mitigation.

New accessible beach access ramps or boardwalks

We are installing four new universally accessible beach access ramps or boardwalks to make our beaches more inclusive. These will help people with reduced mobility, parents with prams, and others move more easily from footpaths to the beach.

The locations are:

• Opposite 80 Warnbro Road, Waikiki
• 30m south of Bayeux Ave beach car park, Port Kennedy
• 1800m south of Bayeux Ave beach car park, Port Kennedy
• Palermo Cove car park (north), Secret Harbour

Closure of beach access paths

Some beach access paths are also planned to be closed and restored to their natural conditions. These paths were selected based on the 2022 review due to low foot traffic, safety concerns, or their proximity to better alternatives. Closures are scheduled to occur in the first half of 2025. Local residents and beach users will be informed of the closures by mailout and signage placed at the path entry points.

Rockingham

• Western path opposite Samuel Street near the Catalpa Escape Memorial (eastern path BEN sign RO42 will remain open)

• Opposite 71 The Esplanade (BEN sign RO46)

• Opposite 7 The Esplanade (BEN sign RO53)

Safety Bay

• Opposite 286 Safety Bay Road

• Opposite 418 Safety Bay Road

Port Kennedy

• 150m south of Bayeux Avenue beach car park

• 1200m south of Bayeux Avenue beach car park

Secret Harbour

• 230m south of Pulsano Mews Emergency Access (BEN sign RO318)

• 15m south of Siracusa Court beach car park

• 160m south of Siracusa Court beach car park

Golden Bay and Singleton

• 530m south of Crystaluna Drive beach car park
