The Rockingham Arts Centre offers a range of workshops for artists at all skill levels across a wide variety of mediums, techniques and materials. Our workshop program is designed to help artists build skills, knowledge, confidence and create connections to pursue their practice to a high standard while enjoying the process of art making.

Our facilitators are highly skilled and selected for their capacity to communicate and deliver genuine learning experiences.

Workshops for children

Art Explosion graphic

We are seeking expressions of interest from experienced art-based facilitators for our Art Explosion school holiday art workshops at Rockingham Arts Centre.

Expressions of interest are sought from facilitators who have experience working with children to create a dynamic and fun series of art projects designed to build confidence and skills for our young creatives aged six to 18 years.

This program will run during the 2025/2026 school holidays with a minimum of six and maximum of 12 participants per class.

Join Rockingham artist Tich Dixon as she shares her skills and knowledge of Lino Printing.

Participants will be guided from the intial drawing and design through to carving and printing a lino block using the relief method. in creating a line drawing as a starting point, which is transferred on to the block and then carved out (Relief method).

Participants will also experiment with different techniques of inking and reduction printing, and working back into the prints with other mediums.

Join artist Bridget Seaton to create an A5 sketchbook from scratch using specialist bookbinding materials and quality acid free art papers.

Learn the techniques to fold, assemble and bind your book and receive a set of instructions allowing you to continue the craft at home.

The hardbacked sketchbook has an exposed spine and features the robust and decorative binding method of French Link stitch which enables the book to open flat. Personalise your book with the addition of washi tape or stenciling.

Join artist and academic Helen Coleman for an art-meets-science experience to learn how to make your own paints using ancient techniques in this two-part, hands-on workshop.

In the first session, participants work with a range of local earth samples, using the levigation technique to create fine pigments suitable for paintmaking. During the following session, these pigments are mulled with a range of natural binders to create smooth tempera, glair and gouache paints.

This workshop also covers lightfastness of natural paints, paint-pan filling and the purpose of various paint additives. Students will explore these paints as art mediums, creating swatches and artworks to take home along with workshop notes.

This workshop is ideal for beginners to experienced artists who are keen to incorporate natural pigments in their practice.

Watercolour landscape

This is the perfect workshop for students curious about trying watercolour painting, or those who have tried it but never had the materials and techniques explained and demonstrated properly.

Annette Pesek will guide you through the different types of watercolour materials including hot press, cold press, rough papers; types of brushes, paints, pencils; other required equipment such as sketch pad, tracing paper, drawing/graphite pencils, erasers, masking fluid, etc.

Students will be shown how to stretch watercolour paper and the equipment used. The various watercolour techniques such as colour mixing, wet on wet, wet on dry, etc will be demonstrated and then practiced in the form of structured exercises.

Discover the beauty of traditional printmaking with artist and educator Ashlea Reale in this hands-on two-hour workshop.

Learn the fundamentals of drypoint etching, a technique that creates rich, expressive lines and textures without the use of acid. Guided step-by-step, you’ll design and etch your own plate, then print a series of unique artworks to take home.

Participants will also explore how to create etchings using recycled and repurposed materials, making printmaking accessible and sustainable.

Artist and facilitator Vanessa Liebenberg offers another series of exciting workshops for 2026 with Drawing Birds and Flora focusing on developing drawing skills.

Students will observe nature from life and photos, and transferring on to paper and wood surface, using fine liner pens and watercolour pencils.

Students will focus on how to use colour pencils to their full potential and how this medium can be used in layers on wood to give the desired outcome.

Each week will consist of a study of nature and birds to hone their drawing skills and colour theory. Three sessions will be on paper doing studies and three sessions on wood

Award winning watercolour portrait artist Sheree Dohnt shares her process and top tips in this workshop to help you gain confidence in painting portraits using watercolour.

Sheree simplifies the process to help students better understand and unlock the secrets she has been perfecting over the years to paint a beautiful face in watercolour. The workshop will begin with a demonstration before students complete their own painting.

Under the instruction of talented artist and facilitator Vanessa Liebenberg students will be focusing on the theme of Flora to explore the use of oil paint as a medium.

Both the theme and medium is important and we will focus on oil paint application, colour mixing, mediums and painted surface preparation, as well as observing nature and translating the form, colour, texture and light onto your artwork surface.

We will be working on primed paper for 3 to 4 sessions and canvas for the remaining sessions.

A workshop designed to build practical drawing skills, visual awareness, and creative confidence in a supportive learning environment.

Students will develop strong observational skills by learning to draw what they truly see rather than what they assume.

Throughout the course, participants are introduced to a clear, repeatable sketching process — from breaking subjects into simple forms, through refining structure, to incorporating pen work for depth and clarity.

A unique and creative workshop that invites participants to create a special gift or handmade decoration for the Christmas season.

In this workshop, participants will be inspired by Australian and non-Australian birds to create beautiful Christmas bird collages out of fabric scraps and embellish the birds with simple hand-embroidery using a variety of threads and texture in a 4-5 inch embroidery hoop.

This two-part workshop introduces participants to creating sculptural vessels using paper-mâché pulp. Starting with small bowls or containers as simple armatures, participants will learn how to build basic forms using paper pulp, developing an understanding of structure, balance, and proportion.

The workshop explores surface treatment and embellishment techniques, including texture, pattern, and the addition of mixed materials.

Suitable for beginners, this workshop focuses on accessible processes, creative exploration and the transformation of recycled paper into unique, expressive objects.
