Native Plants Giveaway

If you want to help support native birds and bees, and build an attractive greenspace without large watering requirements, make sure you've got this one in your diary.

Our Native Plants Giveaway was first established in 2018 as a way to assist residents in building waterwise gardens and to help support the establishment of neighbourhood habitat for wildlife. Due to its popularity, the event is now held annually and the amount of plants given away has more than tripled.

Autumn and winter are a great time of year to get your plants in the ground as you will be able to capitalise on seasonal rainfall. Once established, native plant varieties require very little watering as they are usually drought tolerant plants, adapted to our unique conditions.

Our annual event is back in May.

  • Date: Sunday 3 May
  • Time: 7am – 12 pm
  • Location: Dixon Road Reserve (entry via Dowling Street)

What's on offer?

This is a first come, first served event no registration is required. On the day, Rockingham residents will be eligible to collect a ten or five pack seedling (tubestock) bundle. These bundles contain a mix of groundcovers, small shrubs and clumping plants. Each bundle will be slightly different, but you can expect kangaroo paws, native wisteria, conostylis species and much more.

The five pack bundle is a new edition in 2026, which in addition to being native and waterwise seedlings are also considered firewise, to help build your climate resilient garden. Ten packs will not be separated out on the day once the limited five packs are gone.

Check out our informational flyer for more information, including the pick-up location.

A firewise garden is designed and maintained to reduce the risk of bushfire impact on your home and other buildings on your property.

Even though all plants may burn under the right conditions, there are some species that are more fire-retardant than others. Check out the guide developed by Department of Fire and Emergency Services, to help people living in bushfire prone areas create gardens that reduce risk of house and garden loss in a bushfire.

WA Tree Festival 2026

The City has teamed up with other local governments for the WA Tree Festival, held from Saturday 11 April – Sunday 10 May 2026.

The 2026 WA Tree Festival is sponsored by the Government of Western Australia, with the support of WALGA and Perth NRM.

Trees are essential in a warming climate and are critical in:

  • Cooling us down by providing shade and transpiration which substantially lowers daytime temperatures.
  • Providing habitat for wildlife through urban tree canopy, supporting biodiversity which in turn supports us.
  • Improving mental health and wellbeing. Trees are shown to reduce stress and improve mood, helping us to relax. Spending time in nature improves cognitive function and enhances our learning abilities.

The WA Tree Festival brings local governments and community groups together to help share the value of trees collectively, highlighting the importance of tree canopy cover and its numerous benefits.

To find out more about the festival and what events are happening around Perth- visit the WA Tree Festival Facebook page. A list of City organised events have been listed below, along with incentives to help build canopy and increase biodiversity in your suburb.

In December 2025, the City released its Urban Forest Strategy, providing a framework for the protection and expansion of Rockingham’s urban forest through greening in public open space and streetscapes; building on the City’s Greening Plan 2017.

The Strategy is underpinned by four Key Elements and Goals that drive the actions for canopy cover targets.

  1. Protect the existing urban forest and apply a valuation framework.
  2. Expand the urban forest and increase tree canopy cover with an integrated approach.
  3. Proactively manage the City’s tree assets, monitor changes to canopy cover and apply best practice maintenance principles.
  4. Drive change through collaboration with community and incentivise tree planting and protection.

Actions outlined in this plan will be delivered over the next five years.
