Help to establish neighbourhood habitat for wildlife and build a waterwise garden, learn more about our annual Native Plants Giveaway and involvement with WA Tree Festival.

Native Plants Giveaway

If you want to help support native birds and bees, and build an attractive greenspace without large watering requirements, make sure you've got this one in your diary.

Our Native Plants Giveaway was first established in 2018 as a way to assist residents in building waterwise gardens and to help support the establishment of neighbourhood habitat for wildlife. Due to its popularity, the event is now held annually and the amount of plants given away has more than tripled.

Autumn and winter are a great time of year to get your plants in the ground as you will be able to capitalise on seasonal rainfall. Once established, native plant varieties require very little watering as they are usually drought tolerant plants, adapted to our unique conditions.

Native Plants Giveaway 2026

All seedling bundles have been allocated, thank you for everyone for attending our 2026 Native Plants Giveaway event. We will see you at our next event in May 2027.

Once seedlings have been planted, give your tubestock pots a second life by dropping them off for reuse at Native Plants WA, located inside Rockingham Golf Course (Elanora Dr, Rockingham).

For more information regarding the Native Plants Giveaway please contact the City on 9528 0333 or customer@rockingham.wa.gov.au.

A firewise garden is designed and maintained to reduce the risk of bushfire impact on your home and other buildings on your property.

Even though all plants may burn under the right conditions, there are some species that are more fire-retardant than others. Check out the guide developed by Department of Fire and Emergency Services, to help people living in bushfire prone areas create gardens that reduce risk of house and garden loss in a bushfire.

WA Tree Festival

Annually during April and May, the City teams up with other local governments for the WA Tree Festival.

The 2026 WA Tree Festival was sponsored by the Government of Western Australia, with the support of WALGA and Perth NRM.

Trees are essential in a warming climate and are critical in:

  • Cooling us down by providing shade and transpiration which substantially lowers daytime temperatures.
  • Providing habitat for wildlife through urban tree canopy, supporting biodiversity which in turn supports us.
  • Improving mental health and wellbeing. Trees are shown to reduce stress and improve mood, helping us to relax. Spending time in nature improves cognitive function and enhances our learning abilities.

The WA Tree Festival brings local governments and community groups together to help share the value of trees collectively, highlighting the importance of tree canopy cover and its numerous benefits.

The WA Government has recently released the first Urban Greening Strategy for greening spaces in Perth and Peel. With this release, new incentives and actions have been announced to support community in increasing urban tree canopy and restoring our natural environment.

Check out the State Government website here for more details on the incentives below.
