Overview
The Rockingham Foreshore Revitalisation was completed in August 2019. Stage one comprises three main areas:
- Railway Terrace, a pedestrian friendly shopping and eat street
- Beach Plaza, a new civic heart for Rockingham with a range of recreational, cultural and heritage attractions; and
- The Boardwalk, featuring timber terraces and some ‘young- at-heart’ attractions connecting to the beach.
All three main areas have welcomed improved facilities for cyclists, along with both CCTV and lighting upgrades. In addition, a new accessible ‘Lookout’ and ‘Beach Bowl’ have been created, giving all visitors the chance to take greater advantage of the foreshore’s north-facing beach and expansive parklands which can be transformed into a space for concerts and events.
The project has won several awards including:
Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) WA Best Public Works Project greater than $5m (metro area)
IPWEA WA G.K Watters Local Government Engineering Excellence Award
Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) WA Community Facility of The Year
PLA WA Commendation - Healthy Active by Design

Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) WA Award for Excellence - urban renewal

Location
Facilities/amenities available
The Rockingham Foreshore precinct overlooks Rockingham Beach, a safe and calm beach perfect for families. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby, as well as the shady and expansive lawn areas of Churchill Park and Bell Park for picnics and barbecues.
Boardwalk
The Boardwalk features three shaded timber landings which include an accessible terrace from the Beach Bowl end for disability access, colourful lounge seating, rope net climbing frame, shaded concrete slide with soft-fall surrounds and climbing wall handles.
The original memorial plaques are now featured along the western terrace walls and face out to the ocean.
This area is well covered with CCTV and lighting. It also offers bicycle racks and a bike repair station.
Beach Bowl
The Beach Bowl gives all visitors the chance to take greater advantage of the foreshore's north-facing beach and expansive parklands which can be transformed into a space for concerts and events.
The Beach Bowl features a grassed area that slopes down from the Beach Plaza directly to the sand, creating a new amphitheatre space. The slope can be used as a relaxed picnicking and seating space near the beach and opens up accessibility for all to the Boardwalk area.
CCTV, lighting and seasonal umbrellas are included in this area.
Lookout
The Lookout features a stunning 180 degree panoramic view of Rockingham Beach and provides a stunning vantage point and backdrop for absolutely gorgeous photographs.
This area also features a raised stage area which is completely accessible and provides plenty of shady trees and grassed areas to sit back, relax and enjoy.
This well-lit area includes CCTV, and is home to the well-known anchor, stone and log which have been part of the foreshore for generations.
Beach Plaza
The Beach Plaza is the new civic heart for Rockingham which includes a range of recreational and cultural attractions.
It is a new flexible event space located in the heart of Rockingham that can accommodate up to 700 people. The space has been designed to include lighting and power so that it can host a range of programmed events throughout the year including craft markets, car rallies, farmers' markets, concerts, movies, Christmas carols and buskers.
The new trees will provide shaded areas for alfresco dining outside the restaurants. The interactive lighting displays will create a fun and lively environment by night, and by day the colourful modular furniture and umbrellas will provide a shaded environment to relax.
Park Plaza
The Park Plaza offers a colourful meeting place with plenty of umbrellas and natural shade, and with the addition of ‘after dark’ stencil lighting, this area has been transformed into a fun and lively place offering a unique experience for visitors. It has CCTV, showers, bicycle racks and plenty of space for markets and other events.
Railway Terrace
The new-look Railway Terrace has been reorganised to create a pedestrian-friendly shopping and eat street experience. Footpaths have been widened to allow for new trees and shrubs, public eating pods, bike racks and scattered seating and benches are features to this area, along with the introduction of the Busker’s Stage which is a timber stage in the heart of Railway Terrace with power, lighting and seating.
Patterson Road intersection
Modifications have been made to the intersection and street to slow traffic and provide a left-turning slip lane into Parkin Street to reduce traffic congestion. This area also marks the entry statement to the foreshore with both the Founder’s Memorial Clock and time capsule now positioned into the central median.
