Since 2008, the City of Rockingham has led the way in delivering a world‑first mental health promotion campaign designed to prevent the onset of mental health problems by encouraging everyone to take simple steps to support their mental wellbeing.

Mental health conditions are increasing globally and now account for approximately one‑third of the total 'burden of disease'. This highlights the growing importance of mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention.

The Act Belong Commit campaign aims to strengthen individual resilience and build community connection to help prevent mental health issues before they arise. The campaign targets the general population and encourages people to look after their mental health in the same way they look after their physical health. Its message is based on the ABC guidelines for positive mental wellbeing:

  • Act: Keep mentally, physically and socially active.
  • Belong: Create and maintain new social connections, become involved in local groups, attend community events.
  • Commit: Take up a cause, volunteer, commit to something that brings meaning and purpose to your life.

The campaign works by promoting events and activities based in Rockingham as great ways for people to look after their mental health, from sporting activities, to volunteer opportunities and community events. Check out the Act Belong Commit Activity Finder to see what's happening in your area.

The local Project Officer can also assist your community group or organisation to apply for Healthway funding to host an activity or event that promotes the Act Belong Commit message.
